Expectation is just a state of mind where we keep pushing ourselves to the things might be we don’t want.
Life does not become beautiful because you are perfect, life becomes beautiful because you put your heart into everything that you do…. Sadhguru
How about you have expected something and it happened. Imagine how happy that will make you. Ok! How about you expected something and it didn’t happen, that will make you sad, right?
I hope you got my point. If something good happens with you, it will make you happy. Isn’t it? Has it ever happened to you, whenever you make advance plans for some trip, most of the time, it doesn’t happen & always instant things work fine.
Atleast, it happens with me. It is a very Silly thing to do, when you are looking at your surroundings (friends/relatives/neighbors etc) and you set expectations for yourself.
Below is a fictional story about Boss’s and their expectations towards their employees. Let me know what you feel about this.
“I was working in a store, and suddenly a dog came with a note in his mouth and there was a list of things written on it. There was a bag around Dog’s neck and 100$ in it. I packed the meat and other items and put it in the bag & dog left the store.
I got curious and followed the dog. He was very precise and crossed the road on the signal meant for crossing. Waited at the stop for the bus and boarded the bus in a very nice manner. Then he jumped off the bus at the stop near his home.
He ran inside and opened the big wooden gate with his head. For me he was a very professional dog, better than most humans. Very efficient & sincere in his work. I was still looking from a distance to see the Boss’s reaction after such a great work by his dog.
As it approaches the house door, the dog suddenly changes its mind and heads towards the garden.
What happened next
It goes to the window, and beats its head against it several times, walks back, jumps off, and waits at the door. After some time, a big man came out from the door and started hitting and scolding the dog. I couldn’t see that and just jumped in.
I asked the man, why is he scolding/shouting and hitting the Dog. For me he is one of the most efficient, sincere and honest dogs I have ever seen. He could be used to train other dogs to make them more efficient.
He could be very famous on TV. To which Dog’s boss replied “you call this clever & efficient? This is the 2nd time in this month, that this stupid dog has forgotten the keys”
Moral: You may continue to exceed onlooker’s expectations but shall always fall short of the Boss’ expectations. “

Hope below points helps you to overcome world of Expectations:
Don’t expect and explore more:
When I say explore more, it will first take you out of the expectation state. You should rather focus on execution rather than. Example I had some measurable goals that after some years, I will be going to get admission into Oxford university.
As this is expectation, I have made my mind to be in Oxford . If I get admission in Oxford, that is great. Imagine if I didn’t get the admission, how disappointed I will be & I will start feeling I am a failure.
Why did this failure come to me? Because, I have started that expectation from the beginning and it has not taken me anywhere. Right?
So keep a room for exploring. If you stop exploring, you will always remain in the results of expectations. And exploring is always more fun than expectation. Just trust yourself and you will enjoy life.
Lastly, I would say, “Expectations will not lead you anywhere but Explorations surely will”
Sometimes it is important to change what you are thinking. E.g, if something is making you sad/disappointed, then just change that thoughts and get on to some good thoughts. It will release a lot of pressure from you.
If we keep on thinking that some things didn’t happen what we expected, just explore other things. It will only happen if you don’t keep yourself stuck on things you have expected.
Best way is to switch the thoughts to get out of these things.
Live in the world of realities than just expecting things to happen. You must keep in mind, you need to move on if the thing you expected doesn’t happen. For example, I expect to drive in a big city and don’t know how to drive.
Just expecting this will make me a perfect driver. No, Right? I must take driving classes, learn it perfectly so that I can drive well.
Another thing is, never fear of doing something (ya! I mean right things 😊). Because, sometimes, we stop trying things just out of fear. Don’t do that, don’t let expectation and fear overpower you, Rather work and make things happen.
